Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel
tree :: Owen Magee's Photos :: Thanksgiving 2002 Utah/Colorado Vacation :: Day 2: Zion National Park, UT :: Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel
This tunnel achieved legendary status in my memory. I loved tunnels as a kid--they were always highlights of any vacation. I remembered this tunnel as being 3 or 4 miles long, and having windows cut out along the way so that you can see the landscape. Well, the tunnel is really only 1.1 miles long, but it does contain windows cut out of the side of the tunnel that offer stunning views. It's actually quite dangerous. The tunnel is narrow, two-lane, no median, and twisty, so you really need to concentrate on your driving. But then one of the vistas opens up, and, well, it's impossible not to look. And gasp. And snap your attention back to driving before scraping the side of the tunnel or running into oncoming traffic, all along wishing you could have gotten a better look. This picture is taken on the side opposite of the main canyon.
