I couldn't find my way back down from Upper Emerald Pool--there were rocks
scattered around, and the trail wasn't obvious. It took some scrambling
just to get up there. Anyway, I knew about which direction I need to
go--the rock faces made sure of that--so I just struck out in one direction
figuring that I'd run into the trail anyway. I started having to scramble
over rocks and jumping over water and such, but I had these nice new
Gore-tex lined hiking boots, and it was kinda fun. Finally, I realized I
would have to traipse through a sand-lined pool of water, but it looked
shallow. So, I plunged right in. And my legs sank in the sand down to my
knees--quicksand! I don't even remember jumping out--I just felt a moment
of shock, and then I was out. My legs were soaked and completely encased
in sand. I took this picture shortly after, although some of the sand had
already sloughed off. Not trusting the shallow pools any more, I turned
around and went back towards the Emerald Pool. (Story continued on next
picture.) |
