The last part of the Angel's Landing trail has a chain along it so that you
can hang onto it for support so you don't go plunging 1300-1500 feet to your
quite certain death. I scrambled along the rock with the chain and came out
to an open area. "Aha," I thought, "I made it! I'm the king! Oh yeah!" And
then I noticed that the trail kept going. Across a ridge with a 1300-foot
drop on both sides. And then up a steep spire of rock to eventually end about
1500 feet above the canyon floor. My reaction, upon seeing this, was "Oh no
way in hell." This picture doesn't make it look as bad as it really seemed.
It looks like a four-lane highway compared to how it seemed in real life. The
worst part looked like the part of ridge that would be below the edge of this
picture, where you were forced very, very close to the sheer drop. However, I
saw a number of people going across, like this guy, for whom it appeared to be
no big deal. |
